The product

Ozlo Sleepbuds are ultra-small wireless earbuds - each about 1.6 grams, roughly a quarter the size of typical earbuds - designed specifically for sleeping, including on your side. Rather than active noise cancellation, they use a passive silicone seal plus soft, consistent masking audio to cover snoring, traffic, voices and sudden disturbances. They stream music, podcasts or audiobooks over Bluetooth, then use accelerometers to detect sleep onset and transition to masking sounds, with up to 10-14 hours of battery. The smart charging case doubles as an environmental sensor tracking room sound, light and temperature, feeding a personalised sleep report in the Ozlo app. They target light sleepers, side sleepers and couples who want better rest without pharmaceuticals.

How they did it

Ozlo was founded in 2022 in Boston by three former Bose employees: N.B. Patil, Brian Mulcahey and Charlie Taylor, who had worked on Bose's original Sleepbuds. When Bose abandoned the sleep-audio category, the trio arranged to carry the Sleepbuds research and intellectual property with them, along with a portfolio of roughly 109 patents. They came out of stealth in August 2023 with a $10M Series A led by LifeArc Ventures and ARTIS Ventures. That same period, a Kickstarter campaign passed its $1M goal in 17 days and finished at $1,405,886 from nearly 5,750 backers, followed by an Indiegogo InDemand campaign that added several million more - one of the largest sleep-tech crowdfunding efforts on record. Sleepbuds shipped to paying customers in late 2024, and by mid-2026 the company reported 200,000+ customers across 40-plus countries. The product picked up a CES 2025 Innovation Award and a spot on TIME's Best Inventions of 2025 list. It raised a further $12M in October 2024 and acquired Irish neurotech firm Segotia in January 2026. Ozlo has since grown to roughly 60 employees and launched Sleepbuds 2 at $279 in July 2026.

Why it worked

  • Founders carried 20+ years of Bose sleep-audio R&D and 100+ patents
  • Owned antenna redesign fixed the Bluetooth dropout flaw of Bose Sleepbuds
  • Noise-masking over ANC preserved battery for all-night, side-sleeper comfort
  • Crowdfunding proved demand and funded manufacturing without early retail partners
