The product

SureFlap is a microchip-reading pet door that uses a pet's existing ID chip as a key, letting only your animals in while keeping neighbourhood cats out. Later models added dual-scan indoor and outdoor permissions, curfew locking and an app-connected version for remote control and activity tracking. The same chip-reading technology extended into the SureFeed microchip feeder and water fountain.

How they did it

Cambridge physicist Dr Nick Hill founded SureFlap in 2007 after a neighbour's cat kept invading his home through his cat flap, then spent three years on R&D before launching in 2008. Instead of racing to the bottom on price, he kept premium pricing, patented the technology and sold through pet stores and veterinary clinics. The product became a best-selling cat flap on Amazon and spawned the SureFeed range. In 2015 the company was acquired by animal-ID group Antelliq, which Merck Animal Health bought in 2019 for about €3.25 billion.

Why it worked

  • Patented microchip reading created a defensible premium niche
  • Veterinary and specialty retail channels built trust
  • Premium pricing avoided the hardware price war
  • Connected feeders and health data locked users in
