The product

The Uproot Cleaner Pro is a handheld tool with rows of flexible 'grippy teeth' that rake deeply embedded pet hair out of carpet, rugs, upholstery, and car fabric, products where sticky rollers and vacuums leave fur behind. It solves the frustration of the roughly 90 million US pet households whose vacuums cannot extract woven-in hair, offering a $15-25 manual tool that outperforms machines on embedded fur. The line has expanded to the Uproot Carpet Rake with a 60-inch handle, a Mini version, a 7-in-1 pet grooming vacuum, and a pet-specific laundry system including detergent sheets and washing machine cleaner priced $5-15. Products are sold on Amazon, uprootclean.com, and at Target, Walmart, and Petco, with the signature blue color serving as a brand marker. Unlike gimmicky As Seen On TV gadgets, Uproot patents its designs and focuses on relentless demo-video marketing where the hair-pulling result is instantly visible.

How they did it

Mehul Patel, an Indian-born entrepreneur who had previously founded the ear-care brand Axel Glade, started Uproot Clean in 2021 after spotting how badly existing tools handled embedded pet hair, beginning with a tiny team and a single Amazon-first product. The Uproot Cleaner Pro went viral through short-form demonstration videos showing satisfying clumps of fur being raked out of couches, and the company raised about $605,000 from pet-industry investors including Pet Care Innovation and the World Pet Association. Growth compounded on Amazon, with third-party trackers estimating annual Amazon revenue in the tens of millions, before Patel's team, now joined by retail veteran Dan Fallak, pushed into brick-and-mortar. By 2024-2025 the brand claimed 3+ million households served, distribution in Target, Walmart, and Petco, and a launch into pet laundry care, all while remaining a lean team of under ten core employees.

Why it worked

  • Single-problem focus: one patented tool that visibly outperforms vacuums on the most painful pet-owner job
  • Demonstration-native product whose satisfying before/after videos drive organic and paid social virality
  • Amazon-first DTC model validated demand cheaply before committing to retail shelf space
  • Category expansion from one hero SKU into a whole pet-household cleaning system with recurring purchases
