The product

Blueland sells concentrated tablets and powders for multi-surface, bathroom, glass, hand soap, laundry and dishwasher use, mixed at home in reusable acrylic 'Forever Bottles' ($20-40 starter sets, ~$2-3 refills). Tablets ship in plastic-free paper packaging, cutting shipping weight (traditional cleaners are ~90% water) and cost per use by about 30%. The brand pairs minimal, pastel shelf-worthy design with EPA Safer Choice certified, pregnancy-safe formulas. Distributed DTC by subscription plus Target, Costco and Whole Foods, it differentiates from spray-bottle incumbents and from bulk-refill rivals through design, certification breadth and subscription convenience.

How they did it

After becoming a mother, Paiji Yoo researched microplastics in tap water and realized cleaning products were mostly water shipped in single-use plastic. She teamed up with award-winning chemist Syed Naqvi (previously an R&D leader at a major CPG) to co-found Blueland in New York in 2019. Their Kickstarter blew past its goal at 1,350%, and Shark Tank season 11's premiere brought a $270K-for-3% deal from Kevin O'Leary (with $0.50/unit royalty). The company raised $35M total from investors, hit profitability in 2022, and grew through Covid cleaning demand and retail expansion into Target and Costco. By 2024-2025 it reported over $300M lifetime sales, 1 billion plastic bottles avoided, and a TIME 100 Most Influential Companies listing.

Why it worked

  • Radical packaging rethink: tablets + reusable bottles attack cost, carbon and plastic simultaneously
  • Two complementary founders - consumer CEO plus veteran formulation chemist - built real efficacy trust
  • Kickstarter and Shark Tank provided validation, capital and massive earned media at launch
  • Subscription economics plus expansion from cleaners into laundry, dish and soap grew customer LTV
