The product

The BB-777 is a full-size boombox with dual cassette decks, a CD player, AM/FM/SW radio, USB and AUX input, and Bluetooth streaming, all controlled by real physical knobs and buttons instead of a touchscreen. Inside the vintage-inspired frame is a genuinely modern 270W three-way system with isolated woofers, coaxial drivers and horn tweeters, roughly three times the power of the original GF-777. It runs up to 15 hours on a swappable, TSA-approved 97.6Wh battery, supports TWS pairing of two units for true stereo, and can record cassettes, CDs or radio straight to USB as WAV files - a digitization feature for aging mixtape collections. Dual mic inputs and echo controls make it a karaoke and block-party machine. Kickstarter early-bird pricing was $649 against a planned $1,049 retail, with a 777-unit Founder's Edition selling out on day one.

How they did it

Bumpboxx was started in 2016 by Rob Owens and a small team from Queens, New York, out of love for the boombox culture of their childhood, when hip-hop was born on street corners powered by giant Sharp and JVC boxes. They began with smaller retro speakers and grew the brand organically over a decade, earning co-signs from Snoop Dogg, DJ Khaled and Taboo of the Black Eyed Peas without institutional funding. The BB-777 was their decade-anniversary dream project: faithfully recreating the GF-777, the most iconic boombox of the 1980s, with modern internals. When the campaign launched on Kickstarter in May 2026 it passed $1 million in one hour and $2.7 million from 3,600 backers within 24 hours, with the silver Founder's Edition instantly selling out. Stretch goals unlocked extended warranty and Bluetooth-to-cassette recording for all backers, and the campaign went on to raise more than $7 million, becoming one of the biggest Kickstarter campaigns of 2026 and turning a nostalgia passion project into a breakout hardware success.

Why it worked

  • Deep nostalgia with real substance - a faithful GF-777 recreation that also modernizes power, battery and connectivity
  • Ten years of niche brand-building and celebrity co-signs created a warm audience ready to buy on launch day
  • Cassette-to-USB recording and swappable batteries give it genuine utility beyond decoration
  • Limited Founder's Editions and stretch goals created urgency that drove record day-one velocity
