The product

The EcoFlow DELTA Pro is a high-capacity portable power station that stores several kilowatt-hours of energy and delivers AC, USB and 12V output from a lithium battery. It is designed to replace noisy gas generators for camping, overlanding, RV trips and emergency home backup during blackouts. Users charge it from a wall outlet, a car or foldable solar panels, and can chain extra batteries and a smart home panel to power a house for days. Unlike cheaper power stations, it offers X-Stream fast charging that refills the battery in about two hours. It targets outdoor adventurers, van-lifers and households in regions with unreliable grids.

How they did it

EcoFlow was founded in Shenzhen in May 2017 by four battery engineers, including CEO Lei 'Bruce' Wang, who had previously built drone batteries at DJI. Instead of raising venture money first, the team used crowdfunding as a launch, a demand test and a cash source all at once. Their first product, the RIVER, raised about $1 million on Indiegogo in 2018, and the original DELTA raised roughly $2.8 million on Kickstarter in 2019. In July 2021 the DELTA Pro raised more than $12 million in two months, breaking Kickstarter's record for the most-funded technology project. That same year EcoFlow closed a $100 million Series B led by Sequoia Capital China at a $1 billion valuation, and annual revenue reached about $200 million. Revenue neared $1 billion in 2022, and the company has since grown past 1,500 employees with products sold in 140+ countries. By 2025 it had begun preparing a US IPO while holding a top global share of the portable power station market.

Why it worked

  • Crowdfunding doubled as free marketing, cash and pre-orders with no equity given away
  • Ex-DJI battery expertise delivered faster charging and higher capacity than incumbent power stations
  • Growth timed to rising blackouts and outdoor demand, expanding from camping into home backup
  • Held price-performance leadership, undercutting rivals on features while scaling global distribution
