The product
The Kammok Roo is a lightweight camping hammock made from proprietary ripstop nylon that packs down small and supports up to 500 pounds. It offers an alternative to ground tents for backpackers, car campers and casual urban hammockers who want to sleep or relax elevated off wet, uneven ground. The hammock pairs with tree-friendly Python straps, bug nets, rain tarps and quilts to form a complete sleep system. Compared with cheap hammocks, Kammok emphasises stronger materials, climbing-rated hardware and a social mission. The brand has grown into a line of tents, adventure blankets, hammock stands and overlanding awnings.
How they did it
Kammok was founded in Austin, Texas, in 2010 by Greg McEvilly, then a graduate student who fell out of a cheap hammock on a camping trip and decided to build a better one. Lacking cash for a full production run, he turned to Kickstarter, which was barely two years old, and set a $15,000 goal. The campaign raised more than $208,000 from about 1,900 backers in 50 days, making Kammok the first outdoor company on the platform. McEvilly reinvested the money into fulfilling orders and went on to run nine more Kickstarter campaigns for tarps, quilts, tents and a car awning. Angel investors later provided capital so Kammok could hire its first employees and pay its founder a salary. The company grew into a certified B Corp and 1% for the Planet member with a Give Adventure programme. By 2025 it employed roughly 17 people and acquired outdoor seating brand CLIQ.
Why it worked
- First-mover status on Kickstarter gave an unknown brand instant reach and validation
- Repeated campaigns funded new products yearly without heavy venture-capital dilution
- Mission-driven branding as a B Corp built durable community loyalty
- Consistent material upgrades justified premium pricing versus generic hammocks
