The product

Lomi is a countertop electric composter about the size of a bread maker. Drop in food scraps, compostable packaging and bioplastics, press one button, and heat, abrasion and oxygen break the waste down in as little as four hours into nutrient-rich pre-compost for gardens and houseplants. It targets urban households with no space or patience for a backyard compost pile.

How they did it

Lomi grew out of Pela, the sustainable-consumables company Jeremy Lang founded in Canada in 2011 with co-founders Matt Bertulli and Brad Pedersen. Launched on Earth Day 2021 on Indiegogo, the campaign blew past its $50,000 goal in minutes and finished as the platform's most successful campaign of the year at $7.23M from roughly 19,000 backers - engineered by a pre-launch funnel of email sign-ups and $1 reservations. Crowdfunding momentum converted into mainstream retail, with more than 215,000 units in homes by 2025.

Why it worked

  • A $1-deposit pre-launch funnel engineered a massive first day
  • One-button simplicity removed the main objection to composting
  • Rode Pela's existing sustainable-brand audience and credibility
  • Converted crowdfunding into retail distribution and recurring refills
