The product

The Ridge Wallet is a minimalist front-pocket wallet built from two metal plates - aluminium, titanium or carbon fibre - held together by an elastic band. Cards and cash squeeze between the plates for a far slimmer profile, and RFID-blocking material protects against wireless skimming. The elastic is replaceable, and the design grew into a broader everyday-carry line of key cases, rings and bags.

How they did it

Daniel Kane hated his bulky wallet and carried cards in a rubber band until his father Paul pushed him to build something better. Their 2013 Kickstarter raised $266,622 from 5,305 backers against a $12,000 goal, and a second campaign added $126,873. They took zero outside investment. The key move was treating marketing as a core product: Ridge partnered with roughly 1,000 YouTube creators a year and made content-first storytelling central. Revenue reached hundreds of millions annually with about 75 employees, and tech reviewer Marques Brownlee joined as an equity-holding board member.

Why it worked

  • Reframed a commodity with premium materials and a slimmer shape
  • Bootstrapped with no VC, keeping full control and margins
  • Built a content-first engine with ~1,000 creators a year
  • Expanded one wallet into an everyday-carry brand
