PopSockets Grip
A collapsible phone grip that sold 290 million units and nearly $200M a year - with zero venture capital.
A San Francisco startup that built the world's first professional-grade 4K webcam, bringing DSLR-quality video calls to remote workers in a beautifully designed pocket-sized device.
The Opal C1 is a GoPro-sized desktop webcam with a 4K Sony image sensor, an f/1.8 lens that captures 2.4x more light than typical webcams, and a beamforming 'MicMesh' microphone array for noise cancellation. It solves the problem that shipped laptop webcams stuck at 720p, while the DSLR-as-webcam alternative is bulky, expensive and complicated to set up. Priced at $299 and sold direct-to-consumer through opalcamera.com, it pairs with macOS software that adds computational-photography features such as bokeh background blur, FaceLock auto-framing, touch-up filters and manual DSLR-style controls. Compared with Logitech, Razer or Dell webcams, Opal competes on image quality, industrial design and software rather than price. In 2023 the company followed up with Tadpole, a half-price 4K webcam that also works on Windows, expanding beyond the Mac-only niche.
Veeraj Chugh (Uber Jump product operations) and Stefan Sohlstrom (Uber Freight, Plaid) had been building side projects together for four years before the pandemic pushed everyone onto video calls and exposed how bad webcams were. In December 2020 they went all-in and founded Opal in San Francisco, recruiting industrial designer Kenny Sweet, who had led wearable design at Google and worked on Beats. Instead of crowdfunding, they attracted angel investment from Reddit's Alexis Ohanian, YouTube's Chad Hurley, Instagram's Mike Krieger and Twitch's Kevin Lin; Ohanian's September 2021 tweet about the 'mind-blowing' C1 crashed their website three times and pushed the waitlist past 16,000 people. The C1 shipped to beta customers in late 2021, and Opal raised a $17 million Series A led by Founders Fund in October 2023, with backers including Marques Brownlee (MKBHD) and the D'Amelio sisters. In August 2024 the OpenAI Startup Fund led a $60 million Series B as Opal pivoted toward AI-powered creative hardware, cementing its journey from a three-person pandemic side project into one of the most closely watched consumer hardware startups.
